Indian film industry is one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world. The first Indian film was released in early 1913 and it was Raja Harishchandra, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, who is now remembered through a life-time achievement award conferred by the industry in his name. There were a number of noteworthy film-makers from different regions, who pioneered the growth and development of Indian cinema.
However, one of the most interesting phase of Indian cinema is associated with personalities such as Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Bimal Roy. They made some of the most admirable and memorable films.

He made his directorial debut with as yet unreleased Paanch, with Kay Kay Menon as the lead. The director is known for Black Friday, which is a controversial and award-winning film about 1993 Mumbai bombings. He has gained critical acclaim for other movies also, like Dev D, Gulaal and Gangs of Waseypur. His movies are bold yet, creative.
2. Vishal Bhardwaj
He started his career as a music composer in the film industry and is known for his great sense of music. Vishal is known to be an all rounder, as he has been successful in all roles – Director, Writer, Screenwriter, Producer, Music Composer and Playback Singer. Most of his movies are based on Shakespeare’s novels and he has done an exceptional job with movies like Omkara and Maqbool.
3. Sanjay Leela Bhansali
His movies are like a beautiful poetry narrated on tabloid and are always exceptional. Films directed by him will always be known for their grandeur, amazing acting, soulful music and beautiful dance numbers.
4. Ashutosh Gowariker
Ashutosh was an actor who took up directing after almost a decade in the film industry. His movies mostly look under the skin and are thought provoking. All his movies may not have been interesting enough, but he has always dared to experiment and work on distinctive themes.
5. Dibakar Banerjee
Dibakar Banerjee is a genius known for making exceptional low budget movies like Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006), Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010) and Shanghai (2012). He started his career in advertising and is cited as one of the most influential filmmakers of Hindi cinema in recent times.
